trench warfare reputation of the 1897

“Yeah. They were. That is what is affectionately referred to as a war crime stick. If anybody's never heard the stories from World War One or at least the memes or actually there's a really good there's a really good meme about it where it's like uh you're a you're a 19 year old in the trenches of germany with a war crime stick and it's just like the doom music he's like but basically uh shotguns were super effective and the 1897 was one of the first pumps um that held more than two shells because everybody else really had like single double there were a couple triple barrels out there um and shotguns are super effective but when you only got two shells um you run out of ammo really quickly and reloading is a little bit slower but with a with an 1897 that slam fires meaning you hold the trigger down and you just work the pump and it goes boom boom boom boom boom boom boom one dude gets into a long trench with buckshot and can just go boom boom boom boom and and pretty much you know fuck a lot of people up and and shotguns are super effective at close range um i don't know if you know that um and uh But it got to the point where the Germans tried to claim that using a shotgun in trench warfare was a war crime, to which point we told them, hey, you shoot poison gas at us, so go fuck yourself. And then the Germans basically said, if we catch anybody with a shotgun or shotgun shells, they'll be immediately executed, kind of like they used to do to snipers.”
